Behavior Change Campaigns
Changing Habits, Preventing Harm
Pedestrians and bicycle safety depend on what people do in everyday moments. It only takes a second for a routine outing to end up in tragedy. A driver glances at their phone. A person crosses the street at night. A turn is taken too fast. A vehicle is speeding just enough to have trouble stopping in time. A bicyclist moves through traffic with limited visibility. These are ordinary moments that can change lives forever.
The LookforMe campaign is designed to reach people before one of these dangerous situations arise. Messaging encourages people to take safer actions in a way that’s automatic. For drivers, that means slowing down and expecting pedestrians at any time, all the time. For pedestrians, that means using sidewalks where available, crossing the street at crosswalks, always being aware of traffic, and making sure they’re visible. For bicyclists, that means riding predictably, following traffic signals, using lights and reflectors when visibility is low, and staying aware of surrounding traffic. Drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists all need to avoid distractions.
But this campaign is not built on blame. It is built on the understanding that people don’t always have the best options. Some people walk or bike out of necessity. Some roads lack sidewalks, bike lanes, lighting, or frequent crosswalks. Some communities have long stretches of highway where people still need to travel on foot or by bicycle. Effective safety messaging has to account for those realities.
LookforMe promotes safer behaviors from everyone who uses the roads. Real prevention happens when safe measures become automatic. When everyone is alert to the need to look out for everyone sharing the road.
