Preventing Drunk Driving Starts with You
Preventing Drunk Driving Starts with You
Ending drunk driving isn’t just the job of law enforcement, it’s up to all of us. Whether you’re heading out for the night or just passing through traffic, you have more power than you think to help prevent harm, save lives, and make our community safer.
It starts with planning ahead. If you know you’ll be drinking, decide how you’re getting home before the first round. That could mean picking a designated driver from your friend group, planning on calling a cab or using a ride app, or hopping on public transit. Many transit systems in New Mexico extend their hours on weekends, especially during the summer months. There’s are no excuses to drive impaired.
But even the best-laid plans sometimes fall apart. That’s when it’s time to step in for others. If you’re out with friends and family, and one of them tries to drive after drinking, don’t brush it off. Take their keys. Offer a ride. Get them a ride. Stay calm but firm, because we need to look out for each other. The same is true when someone is leaving your house impaired. Offer them a couch or a ride. Anything to prevent them from hurting themselves or others.
And if you see someone leaving a bar or party and getting behind the wheel when they shouldn’t, you have the right, and the responsibility, to act. If it’s an emergency or someone is clearly a danger to themselves or others, don’t hesitate: call 911. If the situation is less urgent but still concerning, report it through Drunk Busters by dialing 877-394-4258. Trained operators will ask for details that help officers locate the vehicle and intervene safely.
You’ll be asked to describe:
The location (including cross streets or highway mile markers)
The vehicle (color, make, model, license plate if possible)
The behavior you’re seeing (swerving, erratic speed, hitting curbs)
Your name and number may be requested for follow-up, but you can remain anonymous. Just remember: don’t make the call while driving unless you’re using a hands-free device or have a passenger who can call it in. Pull over if you need to. It’s the law, and it’s the only safe way to proceed.
Every time someone steps in — by planning ahead, intervening for a friend, or reporting a drunk driver — they’re helping prevent a possible crash, injury, or fatality. It’s a powerful thing.
You can also be part of the solution in less obvious but equally important ways:
Talk about it. Use your voice. Whether in conversation or on social media, normalize making smart choices about drinking and driving.
Model good behavior. Be the one who always has a plan. Offer to be the designated driver. Stop friends and family from driving impaired.
Share resources. Let your followers or community know about Drunk Busters, transit options, and safe ride programs.
Support local campaigns. Share the ENDWI campaigns through your own social media channels, and help spread the message that impaired driving is not tolerated.
When you stop someone from driving impaired, you’re not just avoiding a ticket or a crash. You might be saving someone’s life. And there’s no better feeling than knowing you made the right call.
